Top 10 Most Profitable Businesses of 2011 (they all use Six Sigma)
The business world is dominated by a select few companies who make billions of dollars every year.
The top 10 most profitable companies of 2011 all have something in common; they are at the top of their game, and they know a thing or two about making money and commercial success. Does the top 10 surprise you?

10. Wells Fargo &Co.– This bank is set to make a fortune this year ($15.3 Billion to be exact) from its mortgage operation and certain executives will be sure to receive some rather hefty bonuses along the way.
9. IBM– The multimedia and computer giant is set to make $15.7 Billion this year making them one of the biggest and most profitable technology companies in history. As they move into emerging and developing markets they’re fortune will surely grow further.
8. Walmart – With projected profits in 2011 of $15.7 Billion, this famous American value supercentre tops the list as the most profitable B2C retailer. Stack ‘em high and sell ‘em cheap is definitely the motto. There are further markets for expansion too in China and Mexico that they will soon be exploring.
7. Bank of America – This bank is on target for $16.3 Billion profit this year and they are the second bank to enter this list. Is this sustainable though? As shares have recently been dropping as countrywide integration brings up some issues.
6. Apple – Apple are set to profit $18.2 Billion this year, bringing them in at number 6. Keen consumers may have expected them to rank higher, but these are the facts. The future of the company is currently unstable after the tragic death of Steve Jobs has created issues around the future leadership of the company.
5. Pfizer – This drugs company are on goal for $18.3 Billion this year, just slightly up on Apple. This pharma company are responsible for some of the most popular and well known drugs on the market.
4. JPMorgan Chase – The 3rd bank here are set to make $19.1 Billion this year and as we are all stuck in a recession, it seems some people are still making money. They do a lot of business in developing markets which makes up for the slow growth in the US and EU sectors.
3. Chevron – Chevron are aiming to make a profit of $19.8 Billion this year from their oil exploration business. This industry is highly volatile but at the moment, it is safe to say it is highly profitable.
2. Microsoft – Microsoft, the IT software giants, are predicted to make $21 Billion this year, making them the highest earning technology company in the world. Still ahead of Apple (but for how long), the corporation are a household name.
1. Exxon Mobil – This oil and fuel mammoth are aiming for a profit of $32.3 Billion this year, making them the most profitable business in the world by quite a margin. The future of this industry is fairly uncertain for the time being, but until then they should enjoy it whilst it lasts.
Steve works in the Business Insurance industry, and someday wishes his company could make this list.
I’m sure six sigma has its benefits, but let’s face the facts – the top 10 companies are either
a) the biggest IT monsters in the global marketplace… The guys that we have no choice but to use if we like modern technology.
b) Drug peddlers
c) Gas peddlers (your time is running out!)
or d) Banks – living very well in spite of the fact that so many of these guys belong behind bars.
